Making numbers interesting

WHO: Major Law firm

WHAT: The annual financial figures

WHY: Ensure key messages, based around end-of-year figures, were communicated

HOW: New annual report format and process

Many key internal audiences were not at ease with reading financial statements, as well as time poor. It was a key strategic objective to make financial statements a refreshing and an interesting read, where key financial indicators, the future outlook, and corporate messages clearly took the attention of the reader.

An annual report format was designed. It provided more interesting and involving content through a commentary from business leaders on the future outlook, a summary of key financial indicators and corporate achievements, as well as a detailed set of financial statements.Commentary was obtained by a series of interviews with the CFO and the leadership team. A set of questions was used that probed outlook against the company’s strategy.

For the first time, the finance department received positive feedback about the format of the published set of financial statements. Key messages were being cascaded to the wider team in a consistent manner.
